one of the most important aspects of what makes sula is our wonderful makers who ensure the sula production is done to the highest standard — clothing made with longevity and durability in mind as well as beauty and precious careful details.

alison aims to visit our makers in vietnam every one or two years, to talk through how the production is coming on, to get a deeper understanding of the processes being used and to ensure all the artisanal workshops she commissions operate with ethical and inclusive working practices.

here alison is being shown how the patterns are printed onto the fabrics before they are cut. we have long been in awe of the incredible historical craftsmanship in vietnam.

alison travelled to vietnam with amy de la haye, fashion writer and curator. alison and amy share a wonderful eye for beauty, finding joy in both the deliberate and careful as well as the accidental, juxtaposing or hidden charm. many of these photos are taken by amy, who wrote of her time at the bac ha market: “we are the only tourists here and are described by everyone as hai ba tay — two granny foreigners!”
